Wind Proposals Canadian Hydro Developers and Gaia Wind are private developers seeking to build one of Canada's largest wind power plants on Amherst Island, at the foot of the Thousand Islands. The combined proposals would consist of at least 80, 150-meter towers covering a large part of the island’s 66 square kilometers. The plant would also consist of a large transformer station, capable of holding thousands of gallons of transformer oil and diesel fuel.
Each of the 80+ towers would be taller than the great pyramid in Egypt, or approximately the size of six silos stacked on one another. Each blade of the turbine’s three blades would be 46 meters long, which will create an arc large enough to park a Boeing 747.
Amherst Island is known across North American for its wildlife habitat, and for the quiet enjoyment it affords to its residents. Naturalists, local and national groups all recognize that these proposals are a threat to this beautiful and peaceful environment and to the people and birds who call it home.
